Bird’s Nest: Herzog & de Meuron in China follows two premier Swiss architects on two very different projects: the national stadium for the Olympic summer games in Beijing 2008 and an entire district in the provincial town of Jinhua, a city with three million inhabitants. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Tate Modern in London, De Young Museum in San Francisco) are literally building bridges between two cultures, two architectural traditions, and two political systems. In the past year, more buildings have been constructed in China than in the whole of Europe. These works must not simply enhance China’s international debut, however. They must serve the everyday needs of the Chinese population for years to come. On the one hand, filmmakers Christoph Schaub and Michael Schindhelm attempt to understand the brilliant and distinct vision of the architects and their unique methods of construction. On the other, it explores the Chinese themselves: their intentions, expectations, and reactions to these distinct buildings. The result is a lesson learned about culture, society, and everyday life in modern China.
