BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

Handsome Charles Tyder (Matthew Goode, Match Point) is the artistic son of a well-to-do Victorian merchant. The year is 1925 and Charles is off to Oxford. He is quietly yearned after and taken under the wing of the free-wheeling Sebastian, the (at home closeted) scion of the Flytes, a wealthy, aristocratic, and devoutly Catholic family. Sebastian invites Charles home for the holidays: Home being the overpowering majesty of the breathtaking Brideshead, a 17th century English estate that embodies the once-awesome power and privilege of the British aristocracy. It is here that the Flyte family struggles against the oncoming 20th century’s raging transformation of sexual values. Lord Flyte (Michael Gambon) has fled to Venice with his lover to escape the stern and fiercely religious wife (Emma Thompson) who rules over the lives of her son and daughter Julia. The latter is frozen between personal desires and her mother’s Catholicism. Enter Charles, attractive, honest, polite, athiest, and would be artist, who sets off shockwaves within the Flytes. However, Charles soon finds himself caught in the web of passions and social obligations that rule Brideshead.- Vic Skolnick
