HAIR EXTENSIONS

Wednesday, July 9 at 7:15 & 9:10pm
Japanese girls with long black hair have become one of the stalest clichés of J-Horror (Ring, The Grudge). In his new comic horror spectacular, Hair Extensions, Japanese cult director Sion Sono (The Suicide Club) both spoofs and reenergizes this famous image with live wire jolts of black humor and shocking imagery. While inspecting a shipment of human hair destined to become the highly fashionable extensions popular with Japanese women, customs officers are shocked to find a dead girl hidden amidst the mass of hair. Fascinated by her abundant black hair, obsessive hair fetishist Gunji (Ren Osugi) steals her body. However, he soon discovers that her still-growing hair has a murderous mind of its own. When Gunji starts selling the dead girl’s endlessly-sprouting hair to local salons, he unleashes a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions. Yuko (Chiaki Kuriyama, Kill Bill’s Go Go Yubari, Battle Royale) is a young apprentice at the hip Gilles de Rais hair salon. When their clients start dying, strangled by their hair extensions, Yuko must save the world from the deadly hair while also fending off Gunji’s passion for her own beautiful long black hair. Simultaneously funny and scary, Sono has woven a delightfully kinky thrill ride, and undoubtedly, the best movie ever made about killer hair extensions. Don’t miss it! Japan, 2007, 108 min., Japanese with English subtitles
