It’s 1981. Raiders of the Lost Ark hits
the big screen, wowing audiences the world over—especially
three twelve-year old boys who conceive the impossible:
create a shot-for-shot remake of Raiders. IT WOULD
TAKE THEM SEVEN YEARS. Boy Scout uniforms become
Nazi costumes, the Mississippi backwoods double for the
Amazon rainforest, and Mom’s basement transforms
into a Tibetan tavern (which nearly burns down). The boys’ passion
and enthusiasm are contagious, but part of the fun is watching
them hit puberty. Voices change, actors appear short in
one scene, tall in the next. The guy playing Indy even
shared his first-ever kiss on-screen with Marion!
For obvious reasons, Raiders: The Adaptation has
screened publicly in only a handful of venues, always wowing
the audience—especially Steven Spielberg.
The filmmakers (who are now in their mid-30s) recently
sold their life story to Paramount Pictures and producer Scott
Rudin (The Truman Show, School of Rock, The
Royal Tenenbaums). Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Daniel
Clowes just completed the script as a potential
project for director Terry Zwigoff (Ghost
World, Bad Santa.)
Produced and Curated for the Cinema Arts Centre by Alan
Hofmanis
