French intellectual and director Claude Lanzmann (1925–2018) devoted almost twelve years of his life to researching, filming, and editing Shoah. A monument in world and cinema history, this epic work, running over 9 hours in length, explores the extermination of six million European Jews during the Holocaust. The film contains no historical footage; instead, it uses interviews with survivors, bystanders and perpetrators to “reincarnate” the Jewish tragedy and revisits the sites where the crimes occurred, making it one of the most important cinematic contributions of all time. (France, 1985, 566 mins, German, Hebrew, Polish, Yiddish, French, English, Greek | Dir. Claude Lanzmann)
