Join us for the latest event of our new CAC Book Club where we'll be examining exciting works of literature and their film counterparts. Read the book prior to the event then join us for a film screening and discussion to reflect on characters, storylines and the central themes that drive the story’s impact across the two mediums. Come share your ideas and viewpoint in this engaging conversation with our community.

The next program will take place on Monday, September 14th. Prior to the screening, we will read Kazuo Ishiguro’s 1989 Booker Prize-winning novel The Remains of the Day, and then watch James Ivory’s BAFTA winning film adaptation, followed by a discussion of both.

Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson lead this extraordinary and moving story of blind devotion and repressed love. Told in a series of flashbacks, Anthony Hopkins stars in a BAFTA-winning role as Stevens, an aging butler at a faded British estate who quietly laments his two great regrets: his failure to open his heart to a former housekeeper (Thompson), whom he loved but could never admit his feelings for, and his willful ignorance toward his onetime employer’s Nazi sympathies. (1993, 134 mins)

Our facilitator, Alyssa Ratledge, is a Huntington resident who loves novels, cinema, and understanding how the narratives we tell shape our views of the world. You'll never see her out in the village without a book in her bag. In her day job, she is a social scientist running research studies in community colleges.
