Highway 301 is a brutal semi-documentary film noir inspired by the real-life Tri-State Gang. Directed by Andrew L. Stone, the film follows cold-blooded gang leader George Legenza (Steve Cochran) and his violent crew as they rob banks and payroll trucks across Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, leaving bodies in their wake. Mixing police procedural narration with gangster action in the vein of White Heat, the film contrasts its sadistic robberies with the morally conflicted women trapped inside the gang’s orbit.
